"already following" label at newsfeed
An "already following" label at the newsfeed when somebody starts following someone, so you don't have to check the profil, if you already following this person. Similar to the fav and promote label/button at artworks in the newsfeed.
API Keys for Developer Access to API Please
Since the addition of Google reCAPTCHA v3 about a year ago, third parties have not had any way to legitimately login to the site and use the API. Could you please setup a simple API Key system so third party devs such as myself can obtain a unique key for authenticating via an API Key endpoint rather than using the reCAPTCHA v3 OAuth system? API Key systems are generally fairly trivial to implement and simply require associating a key with sufficient entropy (64-byte or better) to a user account and optional Client ID and Secret used to authenticate at an alternate endpoint to obtain a session token(s) for making normal API calls. Thanks!
[Site Usability - Keyboard Shortcuts] Remove+Next Shortcut
At the moment, when you pull the "gallery view" (as I term it) up, you have the shortcuts for next, previous, promote and favourite. Whilst these are fantastic and do great, I often scroll through large quantities of entries in my Inbox.
It would be useful to have a keyboard shortcut that went to the next entry, but also allowed you to remove the item you just viewed from your inbox. This has the benefit that, if I have to back out of a written piece or end up leaving and coming back to the page, I don't have to endlessly scroll and try to remember where I was up to quite as much, since submissions would be removed as I go through.
This should probably be the existing key for next (right arrow) + a modifier key to avoid clashes with site navigation or other programs. I had considered the Del key too, but that could be quite disastrous in some cases!
Don't have the 18+ icon on the images.
Probably being nitpicky, but it's distracting to have the 18+ icon on the image when in full view. It even moves when your mouse hovers over the image, but why? You know it's 18+ when you click it/see it in the thumbnail. The rating could be put on the sidebar.
Chat Service for Furry Network
We've had staff discussions about the possibility of using a chat service for members of Furry Network - we feel this would help bring the community together. While members wouldn't be required to use it, this would give the opportunity for members to talk, share submissions, and have a good time in a live setting. We'd like feedback about if this is wanted by the community as well as the chat system we would use.
Here are the options that we've looked at so far:
Discord
Pros
- This system is extremely easy to setup and use.
- We can have both voice and text channels.
- A large portion of the community likely already has this program.
- It's easy to create channels with permissions (especially regarding SFW/NSFW material).
Cons
- Discord is currently revising NSFW guidelines; it's still unclear exactly how this will be enforced, and we'll want to keep an eye on the policies. However, it appears to be moving towards allowing NSFW content.
I've looked around, and it seems like a good number of other furry websites have a Discord server setup; they've opted to take the risks. If we did go this way, we would also have that risk; I worry about what we would do if the Discord server were shut down. The current shift of policy is definitely making this less of a risk, though, and we'll want to watch how it works. Even with that risk, it may be the best option for now.
Slack
Pros
- The servers are simple to create; they're a little more difficult than Discord, but they're still reasonable.
- The service does not prohibit NSFW material.
- Many members of the community likely already have this program.
- Channels can be created with specific permissions; it's not as easy as Discord, but it's reasonable. This way, we can have separate SFW/NSFW channels.
Cons
- Joining a server can be a little difficult at times, especially for people who have never done it before.
- The program is more oriented towards work environments.
- There is no voice chat.
I personally think Slack would be a reasonable program, as well; we wouldn't risk having the server shut down, but it would be a little more difficult for people to use.
IRC
Pros
- We pretty much have free reign over how it's setup.
- Reliable servers exist within the fandom that we could use.
Cons
- Most people don't use IRCs these days.
- Servers can be difficult to setup.
- New users may have difficulties using the system, especially if they've never used an IRC client before.
I would personally only go with an IRC server as a last resort unless we had a huge demand for this.
What do you think? Are there any other programs that you would consider for a community chat system? Please let us know!
Submission Rating suggestion on Defaults
Normally when you are submitting a work / editing a draft piece for submission, the Submission Rating is defaulted to General.
Wanted to suggest that there be no default rating given to drafts, and that users will be required to manually select them (even if it is a general level work) and if they attempt to submit without applying a rating, they receive some sort of notification to the effect of "Please select and appropriate content rating before submitting."
Often times I may be writing up a draft submission and either rushing or doing so absentmindedly and often times will forgot some things: and what with the rating type being all the way at the bottom this is often one of those things.
Fortunately it has only happened once but i've accidentally submitted a mature / nude artwork with a general rating because I just totally forgot about it.
I also wanted to suggest this because, I was discussing the site with a friend and they mentioned that in the short time they've used the site they have had to report several works that were mis labeled as 'General', and we both thought that changing / removing the default rating and forcing a manual selection may cut down on works that slip through on accident. Thanks for reading! :D
Let interests be excluded from the default blacklist
Right now, when tags are added to the default blacklist, every user is prompted to either accept or choose tags to remove. If something is added to someone's interests, however, could we have this automatically be deselected for new default blacklist tags?
Set up Furry Network with a Tor hidden service
As mass surveillance grows in the US and UK, it may become favorable to use anonymizing services like Tor to protect the privacy of furs and their browsing habits. However, doing so results in relying on the total bandwidth of exit nodes in Tor (historically a very limited service). Setting up a Tor hidden service rather evades this entire bandwidth limitation (as well as potentially mitigating using exit nodes as attack proxies or monitoring systems). Previously, Facebook has unveiled their Tor hidden service and proven it's scalable.
At this moment, we aren't going to consider setting up a TOR hidden service. If people do wish to peruse the website with anonymity, there are other services currently available to do so.
Make the site's session cookie permanent or offer a choice
It seems every couple of weeks or so I have to re-login to the site. Having multiple systems logged on means having to re-authenticate them all, which is a pain with a 28 character password which I have to get from a password safe. A cookie that expires is a wise idea for a potentially insecure station, but for secure machines, they're just annoying. I would suggest offering a choice to the user of what sort of permanence they want on the session, and if the software doesn't support multiple cookie types, then just eliminate the timeout.
Age-Restricted Profile Fields
As it stands right now, if we put anything on our profile, everyone is able to view it no matter what site settings you have. It would be a wonderful addition to have specified fields be content locked so only users with mature/explicit selected can view it. This setting is already available for banners and avatars. With this, users are able to post nsfw refs or images of their character without going against the rules of the site.
