DJ Routines & Mixes
I'm not quite sure if the uploading of podcast episodes, shows, or routines that are DJ mixes are accepted.
I am wondering if I'd be able to move some of my shows over from other websites.
This is definitely a bit of a hard topic. Currently, our rules about plagiarism say it includes "[c]reating edits of any work without the original owner or creator’s consent." In general, I would say that anything protected under Fair Use would be fine; however, if large or full portions of songs are used (as in the case of DJ mixes), it would be crossing the line here and would not be allowed unless explicit permission is given.
Improved dynamic filtering.
I absolutely love the system so far, but I think that it could be further improved by including synonyms, and all forms of the words that are put in, so that you can capture and filter out the most of what it is you are trying to avoid seeing.
I find that for quite a few things, that I have to manually enter in as many forms of the thing that I dislike seeing, and I would love to see a more automated system to encompass those ideas.
This is something that seems difficult to implement in a meaningful way. Tags are always going to be changing, and even if we catch most synonyms, some creative spelling is going to slip by. It's something we can look into if there's a large demand in the future.
filters: ideas for more filtering options
After examining the Artwork page, the only thing I can point out for a downside is the lack of filtering options. These are expected to be in the future and I'm eager to see where FurryNetwork will go with filtering options for artwork, photos, written items and videos.
I'm starting this thread for discussion regarding filters for any and all relevant upload items to see if we can come up with. I'd also like to add to this thread some opinions about how filters should work.
The first ideas that came to my mind are:
- Species: from categories (feline, canine, scalie and so on) to sub-species(wolf, husky, golden retriever, ect.)
- General theme / concept: such as Fantasy, Sci-fi, Modern
- Rating: to be calculated according to number of favoritings and promotions divided by days passed since submission upload (this is just a suggestion of a basic concept for a rating system that needs improvement - discussion regarding this idea is also welcome)
Those are just my thoughts. what are yours? make sure to post your opinions and ideas for filtering options and feel free to expand the discussion. Maybe we can come up with something new and different? who knows?
At this point, people are able to search using tags. The one worry I'd have with filters is that most of that can be done just through solid tagging; it's best to keep that simple.
We do have different time periods for popular sorting, and this is being worked on right now to make it work better.
Efficient use of space & Nice looking!
Just because there was zero praises so far. I want to highlight my favorite aspect of FurryNetwork!
Nice looking with efficient use of space. This is one of those rare sites that look fresh and up-to-date while not feeling like everything is massive and wastes space. Today many sites focus solely on the mobile look, but FN has succeeded making the experience great for computer users as well.
I love how artwork tiles on pages, it's a nice experience to scroll through different works - unlike on many other sites where thumbnails seem to float here and there. You've paid attention to both showing artwork big enough and fitting as much thumbnails on one view. Also viewing submissions nicely focuses on the submission itself.
Kind of hoping the feed page would get an update/alternative layout to be more like the rest of the site ^^;
Ability to add a watermark
It would be nice if we could add a standard watermark or a custom. But that may be stupid. I was just suggesting cause my boyfriend and I mostly do sketches and we don't tend to watermark them and the added security would be nice.
In general, we agree with Neotheta on this. Watermarks are a bit tricky - while this does add security, many people will be less likely to share the art. The internet has been doing a much better job at finding the original artist for pieces that are shared; usually, the risk of someone stealing the art and cropping out a signature is worth the potential for attracting new fans.
We'd prefer to leave this up to the artist. They may watermark their work if they want, but it won't be a built-in feature.
Art And Rights
I am curious about both other peoples views on this, as well as the staffs views on this.
If I have commissioned a picture, with me and the artist going onto bad terms, ending in the artist no longer wanting me to post the art [Unlikely but I can't thinks of anything better for an example] Does that mean I have to take it down?
The reason I ask is that, yes the picture were made by the artist bit I payed for it, so in the end, who really gets final say on it?
In my opinion I should be able to post it here, despite the wishes of the artist, as long I give proper credits.
Dave Michaels has a solid response here. Most artists are fine with you posting an image that you commissioned. If there is ever a question about this, just ask the artist; if you have it in writing that you can share, you are usually fine.
If an artist does ask for a piece to be taken down, it's common courtesy to do so.
Notification Optimization
Kinda needs to be more optimization to the notification system. Sometimes when I click on a category it doesn't load and loads the previous category. Does this on all my machines on Chrome and Firefox and Safari (didn't test on Edge (*COUGH* IE *COUGH*)). Don't know if this is a load time issue that throws out an error and says "Fuck it we'll just load the previous request" but might be something in the jQuery if thats what your using.
DNP option for submissions
Giving an author the option of placing an indicator/reminder on the page of a submission that it should not be reposted on e621.net and similar sites would be a nice feature. This could be extended to compare file hashes and eventually visual similarity.
Choose what size of the image the audience gets to see, Only the artist sees the full-sized.
Someone posted a suggestion that you get the option to remove the download button to make piracy harder.
Instead of doing that-- I suggest that we implement something like how DA has it.
On DA, you get to decide the size of the image that the audience gets to see. By doing this, I get to use DA as a sort of vault or archive of my full-sized images. I can go in and snag the full-sized image at any point in the future, but the audience cannot.
On every other website outside of DA, I have to create a smaller version of said image specifically for those websites. And since FN has this neat 'draft' or 'unlisted' option that already kind of works as a vault of sorts-- I think it would be kind of nifty if you could just decide how big the image is that the audience sees. Might also help out people who don't have programs to re-size said images? -shrug-
Dunno if anyone else really liked such a feature as much as me, but I decided to make a thread for it anyway just in case.
