Get rid of the system that allows every user to see all of your activity

aaros 8 years ago updated by DeusExMoose 8 years ago 17 2 duplicates

When users watch you, they can see all of your activity, everything you comment on, everyone you watch, and to be honest this is way too inviting for stalkers.

If you are a content creator with a lot of followers, you probably have experienced at one point or another another user who is stalking you or is harassing you or for one reason or another, you would not feel very comfortable with them being able to instantly go to any comment you make. For some users like myself, I don't want to everyone to see realtime notifications for everyone I watch, everything I comment on, and so on.

My suggestion would be to associate this feature with some kind of mutual "friends" system where only your friends or people you approve can look at all your activity.

Hey all -

We're planning to build a 'first phase' solution to this item shortly, by adding a check box under your Privacy settings, to disable visibility of your actions.

We have some other changes coming shortly regarding user pages which should move the activity feed off to a tab (so it's no longer the first thing you see on someone's profile), and some refinements as to what kind of things get shown in there.

In the long run, we'd like to implement some more fine-grained visibility control to feed items - eg, have a dropdown for "Who can see my feed", with options Everyone/Only people I follow/Nobody - but we think that's best left until after user pages have been updated, and we have a better idea of how in-demand this feature is.

Thanks everyone for your great feedback - I'll let you all know when this feature makes it live!

Even then, it wouldn't be necessary. Twitter tried it once, and all it did was litter the notifications tab. It didn't last.

When I'm looking at a user's page, I want to see the works they've recently posted, and maybe check on recent status messages in case anything's happened. But right now, FN's activity history causes a ton of clutter for profile pages. Half the notifications visible are "User 1 @user1 followed User 2 @user2". I can't see why anyone besides myself would ever want/need that info.

Exactly, maybe this system should just be deleted completely instead.. well it's in voting!

At the moment, as the site is growing rapidly, that can be useful for finding people who are migrating from other sites. I think at least 80% of the people I'm following I only know have accounts on FurryNetwork due to the activity feed.

A (temporary?) workaround for this would be an option to hide those messages from the activity feed, much in the same way the what's new page can be filtered on art, stories, and so on. This would make the activity feed more useful and versatile. It just wouldn't directly solve the stalking issue in the parent post.

I can't agree enough. Ditching it completely would be the ideal solution. But, if it must be had, delegate it to a smaller box somewhere else on the page where it won't be so obtrusive.

The more I think about this feature the more useless it feels overall - not only cause it enables stalking but is there really a useful reason why people should see this type of notifications? I don't think so. So thumbs up to this!

I think the same area could easily be dedicated to display peoples promotions and social posts/discussions, with the other types of notifications removed they would have a good own visible area !

When I go to a profile I check: Their Art, Their Announcemenets, Their Favorites (Is there no favorites section?), and I guess their Promotions, too! I don't really need to see that someone followed someone or commented on something every second. It also washes away the previous things mentioned pretty fast.

XD I commented on my own post and it showed up in the feed. I thought that was really redundant.

Agreed. All of these can go away, and it'll improve the site in every way.

I think giving control over what your followers can see is the best solution to this. Especially since group functionality is planned. You could essentially have this in your privacy settings:

Follower Notification Privacy

Ungrouped Followers

  • Comments [ON/OFF]
  • Favorites [ON/OFF]
  • Promotions [ON/OFF]

Followers in group Developer Furries

  • Comments [ON/OFF]
  • Favorites [ON/OFF]
  • Promotions [ON/OFF]

If that makes any sense at all :P

Just saw this here: http://support.furrynetwork.com/topics/461-get-rid-of-the-system-that-allows-every-user-to-see-all-of-your-activity/

Pretty much the same, but with a lot more detail. This ticket can be killed. ^^;

Seconding this. All I care about (and all I want others to easily find about me) are images, journals and notices. It really creates a lot of clutter.

Dangit... I already commented here. Sorry, browsing through feedback and popping in for input here and there.

(A delete button would be nice xD)

Unless the site is redesigned in a way that hides that information from EVERYONE by default and only makes it visible to people you explicitly authorize, the features you want won't actually accomplish anything at all. Even if you don't explicitly approve the user as a friend, anyone can go to your page and see your activity whether they're watching you or not. Blocking them won't help either as, at the moment, your profile and activity on general-rated submissions is still visible to logged out users.

I do understand a need for privacy, but it would require significant changes to the site's systems to facilitate this.

While I +1 this, for me my real problem is not people seeing my activity, but my activity spamming my feed instead of things that are actually important, such as status updates and uploads.

Also, I don't want to see 600 messages from my follows about who they followed and what they promoted, I want to see their status updates and uploads.

I believe that promotions should be exempt from this change, because otherwise, what is the point of promotions? besides, anyone who doesn't want to see their promotions would just not promote anyway. As for everything else? Yeah, I can probably see that.

I understand that the way things are set up now is to help artists get exposure, so that they might not be stuck in inpenetrable bubbles of obscurity (something I'm far too familiar with,) and I would prefer to keep it that way.

On that note, I want to be able to control what I see on the feeds. I don't need to see what the artists have published because I already get that in the What's New tab.

I feel this also applies to by extension the difference between favourites and promotions, which should be updated as well.

From looking at Varka's comment, it looks like they're addressing it. However, I don't believe a friend system is necessary. If privacy settings can cover this than I'm all for it.
