Account privacy for non registered users

Oxy 8 years ago updated by Extreme_Dinosaurs 8 years ago 11

Hey there!
I was thinking about a feature that could be added when things calm down.
Why not adding a "hide account to the outside" feature. It would mean that, to see the profile, you would have to be a registered user.

Yes and maybe exclude "private" accounts from google results.

This is a good idea - we talked about this internally, and it'd probably be implemented as follows:

A new tab, "Privacy", under "Edit My Account", with a check box "Make my account only visible to registered users", and possibly another one "Don't allow search engines to index my account".

We'd like to see how many votes this gets, so we can decide if it should be implemented before or after launch.

This is a really good idea. I know that indexing from search engines is a concern from a few users, and allowing them to set whether or not their pages should be indexed would go a long way in making them comfortable.

Yes, I like this implementation of the two options. I for one would like to be 'non index' but allow for non account holders to view, so distinguishing those two would be my most requested feature. This would allow me to maintain the singular gallery in one space without making the demand for my audience to be registered. Not many places offer this level of flexibility. Tumblr sort of does, but teh economy of Tumblr means that, once its reposted or promoted there, the non-index falls away, which is annoying if you want to stay off searches. Being able to use twitter to link to my FN gallery and promote myself is the most ideal. Please consider making this a priority. Furry as a community is great, but due to the sheer amount of fanart we make, it tarnishes searches for those topics and furthers our negative public image. More control over how someone finds my work is the most important element to a sustainable site for me.

This might be splitting hairs, but "registered users over 18" as visibility option would be nice as well. I don't want kids looking at my account, even if they are registered. But yes, having the option to be unindexed and visible only to registered users would be great.

I was thinking about this as soon as I registered on the site. Maybe a third option could be awesome, in which only SFW content would be displayed for non-registered users. Right now it appears as "content warning" and people can click "show me anyway". What if non-registered users just see the clean artwork and the NSFW just doesn't appear? Not talking about "content warning", just that for non-registered users, it doesn't even exist. I think that could be a really cool option for privacy.

As for that 'possibly' under "Don't allow search engines to index my account"...please make that a definitely. I need this feature. I am going to fight for this feature. So few sites offer this. And I mean, I would like this to be a seperate option from 'requires an account' because I want people to be able to visit my page, but not need an account. But also don't want all my stuff indexed.

I'd just like to point out that just because your site asks search engines or other automated scripts not to index your page doesn't mean they will comply. They're supposed to, but that has relatively little to do with whether they do.
