Add a "Hot" page to the Gallery area?

I have noticed that due in part to the current content viewing algorithm in the Gallery section of the website, a sort of social oligarchy of several artists has spawned, overruling the majority of the artist community, who simply has their art placed into Most Recent and buried under multitudes of other newly-published works of art. This makes it rather difficult for newer artists on the website to get their content noticed. The closest we currently have to a good compromise is Most Popular Last Week and Most Popular Last Month, and even then that doesn't really solve the problem. Personally, I think that it would be best to have a "Hot" section (stop giggling and let me explain) like what Reddit has, a section for posts that have accumulated a significant amount of traffic or other potential form of rating so that newer, more praiseworthy content can be quickly identified. I think that a system like this could greatly benefit from a simpler form of rating, like upvotes and downvotes or likes and dislikes.

From what I see around, the formula for "Hot" (*giggle*) is only logarithm from (upvotes - downvotes), all that divided by seconds of how old the thing is. Nothing else.

We do not have downs, so it's just ups.

So... it is basically what we have with the week/month top. I believe it wouldn't hurt, though. Perhaps it could be some sort of algorithm for couple of randomly selected hot-picks, or something like that. Perhaps once the site grows a little more, then it might be indeed worth having something like this.

I agree, Rykomi. I think the biggest difficulty is getting your work noticed on the site right now, especially if you're new. We're looking at other ways to get noticed, but having something that shows newer work would definitely be good. I'm not completely sure what shape it'd take, but once we have these other improvements in place, we can take a look and see if this would be helpful.

Seems like a fascinating prospect. Maybe you could add a Hot page that updates every 24 hours. Would that work at all?

We have something like that currently; it updates with the submissions receiving the most faves/promotes/visits for that week. Adding a daily filter would probably do the trick without having to add extra parameters.
