DJ Routines & Mixes

Sylar Enderpaws 8 years ago updated by Digby (Community Manager) 7 years ago 4

I'm not quite sure if the uploading of podcast episodes, shows, or routines that are DJ mixes are accepted.

I am wondering if I'd be able to move some of my shows over from other websites.

This is definitely a bit of a hard topic. Currently, our rules about plagiarism say it includes "[c]reating edits of any work without the original owner or creator’s consent." In general, I would say that anything protected under Fair Use would be fine; however, if large or full portions of songs are used (as in the case of DJ mixes), it would be crossing the line here and would not be allowed unless explicit permission is given.

Good question! Acceptable upload policy lacks section for multimedia uploads in general. Admins/mods go go go fix it!

My common sense would say that they are be okay as long as your uploads don't break this rule listed at AUP:

"No uploads that infringe on anyone’s intellectual property, privacy, or other applicable rights (derived content must be credited towards the original creator)"

And on top of having the rights to play/feature the music/videos should count as derivative content / you contribute your touch into them, such as in case of DJ mixes: skillfully mixing tracks and not simply making a playlist with winamp-like fades.

I have uploaded a mashup, if you are interested to hear the type of work that it entails.

I gave proper credit (and links) to the original artists.

Obviously this isn't representative of my shows that I do, as mashups are the most involved audio manipulation that I get into that isn't me producing music. But routines have a huge complexity to them which is offset by human error and sense of both time and quick, spur of the moment decision making.
